Appointments for renewal of DIMEX’s (“Documento de Idenficación Migratorio para Extranjeros“) can be requested as of October 1th, 2022

The persons who have the DIMEX expired, and those who had the benefit of the automatic extension established in resolution N°DJUR-0197-12-2021-JM, will be able to request appointments to process the renewal within three months after October 1th, 2022.

The appointments will be granted for January 1st, 2023 and must be requested withing the 3 month period after October 1st. Because of the above the term of the DIMEX will be extended until the day of the appointment.

HOW CAN I REQUEST MY APPOINTMENT?

You can request it calling to (+506) 1311 or on the website www.migracion.go.cr, or at Banco de Costa Rica.

WHERE IS THE PROCESS PERFORMED?

Process will be carried at Immigration office in San José or any Regional Offices, Banco de Costa Rica and Correos de Costa Rica (additional costs may apply at the last two institutions)

FOREIGN PERSONS WITHOUT DOCUMENTATION PROCESS WHO WERE APPROVED AND NOTIFIED OF THEIR IMMIGRATION CATEGORY BEFORE OCTOBER 1, 2022:

From the notification of the resolution that grants the authorization to stay, the foreign person must proceed with their appointment for documentation for the first time within the following 90 days.

Once the respective appointment is obtained within the 90 days period, the notified resolution that authorized the Immigration category or subcategory, will be the document that proves its legal permanence in the country.

FOREIGN PERSONS WITHOUT DOCUMENTATION WHO WERE APPROVED AND NOTIFIED OF THEIR IMMIGRATION CATEGORY AFTER OCTOBER 1, 2022

If the foreign person is notified of the approval of their immigration category application and is notified of the resolution that grants them authorization to stay after October 1, the person must proceed to request the appointment for documentation for the first time within the following 90 days.

Once the respective appointment is obtained within 90 days, the duly notified resolution through which immigration category or subcategory was granted, will be the document that proves its legal permanence.
